A fellowship of the heart

Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive. The very first paragraph I laid eyes on was....

God is calling together little communities of the heart, to fight for one another and for the hearts of those who have not yet been set free. The camaraderie, the intimacy, that incredible impact by a few stouthearted souls--that is available. It is the Christian life as Jesus gave it to us. It is completely normal.

I like this!!!!

Light reading

Here are some books I recently picked up from Amazon Market Place, some light reading for my coming plane rides :)

The Sky is Falling - Leaders Lost in Transition

The Sky Is Falling

The Google Story

The Google Story by David A. ViseI Have just finished reading a book I really enjoyed. The Google Story by David A Vise.

It tells the story of the meteoric rise of Google from an idea to the huge corporation it is today leaving many big industry players in their wake. The book gives the human side to Google and the struggle getting the start-up off the ground. From 2 very bright guys Sergey Brin & Larry Page who hold the motto "Don't Be Evil" they took an idea and persisted with it until it succeded.

Evil is what Brin & Page determine it to be. I have to say after reading the book which was a very positive account of Google it just made me a little warey and I don't necessarily trust Google with my information. I know that was the BIG issue surrounding Gmail but I sense it may be, to some extent, true. Google is innovative, BUT, they aren't transparent, holding a great deal close to their chests and they do it to keep the competition on their toes, BUT it causes a sense of distrust.

I am not sure why I liked reading it (I consumed it in 2 days) But I like the excitment of big business and in reading it, I somehow entered their world for a short time.

Alan Roxburgh's new book - The Sky is Falling

I've been able to get an early look at Alan's new book, The Sky is Falling - Leaders Lost in Transition. A Proposal for Leadership Communities Recovering Fresh Imagination to Take New Risks for the Reign of God.

It is looking like another great book from Alan. Here is what Tim Keel wrote.

"This is more than a book, it is a manifesto, a proposal for a new way of imagining a common life together as the pilgrim people of God seeking to fulfill God's purposes for the world in our time. Roxburgh's call for a new kind of space that is simultaneously occupied by those in traditional church organizations ("liminals") and by those who are out exploring new ways of believing and belonging ("emergents") is desperately needed. Moreover his exploration of new modes and metaphors for leadership and organizational structures goes a long way in helping fund our collective imagination so that we might respond to the opportunities and challenges we are presented with in fresh and dynamic ways."

- Tim Keel, Founding Pastor, Jacob's Well Church, Kansas City, MO.

It is due for release at the end of January 2006

I have a confession: I love pr & marketing

It probably started from my early teens working in the retail industry and then quickly rising to managing a number of departments in a very large department store.

It is probably the thrill of getting a message across to a consumer and looking at creative ways to do it.

I just picked up a new book (from Borders) Guerrilla PR by Michael Levine Looks like some good summer reading

Our small piece of Americana

A local shopping mall has gone through some major changes and this week they opened a large part of the new centre.

Borders Books has opened a store and I have to say I love it. Huge range of books etc and I just like walking through it looking at the books.

Starbuck will be opening soon with a number of new restaurants and entertainment area.

A new book by Brian McLaren

Here is Conversations About Hell - an excerpt from the new book.

Practicing the Presence of People

I have started reading Practicing the Presence of People by Mike Mason. He makes a what seems to be an accurate comment of modern man.

"Plagued by distractions, addictions, obsessions, never at home in his own skin, never truely connecting with others, never at one with present reality, and anxiously awaiting a plane going nowhere."

He has some good things to say about going deeper in relationships.

New Books

The other two books arrived today from Amazon.com The Continuing Conversion of the Church by Darrell L Guder Practicing the Presence of People by Mike Mason They will, no doubt, stimulate some thinking.

I have enjoyed reading Sex, Economy, Freedom & Community by Wendle Berry, and the chapter on war is particularly interesting as it is about the first Gulf War. It gives a new and interesting perspective.
